DTS:X Sound Coming To Xbox Games

Earlier today Microsoft announced that DTS:X sound will soon be available for Xbox One games. The news broke thanks to a Tweet from Stephen Wilssens, one of Microsoft’s lead audio team.

DTS:X has been available on the Xbox One since 2017 for Blu-ray movies only. DTS:X like its main competitor, Dolby Atmos, is an object based surround sound system. What this basically means – is that it builds true three dimensional audio “landscapes” that places you smack bang in the middle of all the action.

A simpler way to look at it would be this. Normal sound systems create the sound at the speaker and toss it out into space where you’re listening. Dolby Atmos and DTS:X creates their sound in the spaces between the speakers.

Unfortunately we have very little information apart from that. There was no mention of what games will take advantage of DTS:X. We don’t know if Microsoft will be adding headphones support and we have no official release date. But I’d imagine, like all new features coming to the Xbox One, it’ll hit the Insiders first to iron out all the bugs.

So another great feature will hit the Xbox One soon. Do you have a sound system at home that can take advantage of either Dolby Atmos or DTS:X or would you rather the added headphone support ASAP. Please feel free to leave any thoughts you have in the comments below.
