Subterrain
Subterrain is being developed and published by PixellLore, who are a small indie developer based in South Korea. The game has already been released on the PC, it came out on the 21st of January last year and is due out on the Xbox One and PS4 on the 27th of this month.
Subterrain is a third-person top down survival based adventure game where you have to take control of, and manage an entire complex. The game is set on Mars and you play as Dr. West. You have been personally invited to the red planet by Jeff Murray, an entrepreneur and leader of the facility there. Dr. West has been working on research in a bid to find a cure for the Alzheimers disease which has afflicted his wife and hopes to continue his work on Mars.
After an accident in a lab Dr. West has been thrown in prison for murder. While locked away some sort of alien outbreak occurs at the facility, the outbreak has turned all the colonists into horrible mutants. Can the good doctor survive long enough to escape?
Gameplay in Subterrain is a mix of survival and combat with a good bit of crafting thrown in too. Thirst, hunger and exhaustion all have to be catered for on the survival side of things. You will also need to take care of any bleeding or fractures you may suffer during combat. Failing to do so will more than likely lead to contamination followed quickly by death.
On your travels through the vast complex you need to keep your eyes peeled for any items that can be used in research. Some items can be crafted to make medicines and cures while others may be used to craft new weapons or tech. Combat in Subterrain is a mix of both melee and ranged. In combat the game makes use of both analogue sticks and you can customise your ranged weapons to best suit your current situation.
Most of the levels in Subterrain are randomly generated, meaning no two play throughs will be the same. The game is also open world, so you get to decide where to go and what you want to do next. Do you fix the temperature and oxygen generators in the area you are in to make it hospitable again or do move on to more pressing matters like clearing out a room full of alien/colonist mutants that may blocking your way to the next section. The story will progress depending on where and what you are doing.
Subterrain is already out in PC. So far it has received very promising reviews and feed back from people that have played it. I read over a few Steam reviews before putting this piece together and they all say its a cracking game. The game heads to consoles on the 27th, hopefully its just as good using a controller.
Is this game something that might interest you or maybe are you definitely picking it up on day one. Feel free to leave any Subterrain thoughts you may have in the comments below.
