Star Trek Online
Good news for all Star Trek fans out there, Perfect World Entertainment and Cryptic Studios has just announced that they are bringing their MMORPG Star Trek Online to the Xbox One and PS4 later this year. No actual release date has being given but my guess is that it will hit the shelves around October or November, with a bit of luck we might get it a bit sooner. This was released way back in 2011 on PC and became free to play in 2012.
When the game lands on consoles later this year it will bring with every single piece of content that was released for it on the PC over the last few years. This includes 2 expansions, 130 episodes and 11 seasons all wrapped up together in one tidy package for console gamers to sink their teeth into. When you start the game you get to choose from between 32 different species as your protagonist for your adventure and you'll also have to decide which side you want to fight on, be it for the Federation, Klingons or the Romulans. Star Trek Online also offers an uncountable number of customisation options, so that you can have your chosen Captain all togged out the way you like. There are hundreds of star ships available to chose from and ship to ship combat also plays a large roll in the game.
Cryptic Studios has also promised an updated version of the game for consoles with better visuals and hopefully less of the bugs that apparently plagued the PC game. One of the big challenges with the game of course will be translating the mouse and keyboard controls from the PC to the joypads for the Xbox One and PS4. The developers are promising a streamlined control system for consoles, something in line with the controls of Neverwinter, I have never player Neverwinter so I couldn't comment on how well the controls work for it unfortunately.
Star Trek Online is a free to play game, the developers have promised that you can play all the way to the level 60 cap without paying a single penny, of course if you want to get there faster and maybe get the best equipment quicker, then you can pay actual real world money to do so. This did cause a few issues among PC players back in the day, as free to play equalled pay to win, if you wanted to go far in the game you just needed to buy your way there instead of putting in the hours and earning everything you get the good old fashioned way.
I've never played a Star Trek game, I do love The Next Generation and Voyager TV series as well as some of the movies that have being made, hopefully we get a chance to see a bit more of it at this years E3 because I think this might be one to consider come the autumn if you like your Star Trek.
