Tokyo 42 – The Lovechild Of Syndicate And GTA1

Tokyo 42 is been developed by SMAC Games and will be published by Mode 7. It has been described by it's developers as "the lovechild between Syndicate and Grand Theft Auto 1". I presume this is because it borrows a similar isometric camera angle used by Syndicate back in 1993 and maybe also because it uses some of the tactical elements that Bullfrog applied to its crime sim back in the day. As for the GTA 1 connection, well its an open world city where you decide when and how to do things. Tokyo 42 is set for release on the 31st of this month on the Xbox One and PC, but PS4 players will have to wait till the middle of July before they can get their hands on it.

Tokyo 42 is set in a future version of, you guessed it, Tokyo. You play as a person that has been framed for a crime they didn't commit and you find yourself set along the road to becoming an assassin to clear your name and uncover a dark conspiracy that will effect the entire city.

Tokyo 42 is an open world game, this goes for both the single and multiplayer side of things. The game will give you the freedom to decide how you would like to complete your missions. Do you take the stealth approach and do things as quietly as possible or maybe you prefer the Rambo approach and go in all guns blazing, shooting anything that moves in the face, whatever you decide, the freedom to choose is there. SMAC's new baby will have a large range of both guns and tools that you can buy and use to complete the missions but similar to GTA, firing your weapons on the streets will more than likely bring the law down on top of you.

For me, at first glance anyway, this kinda looks like an isometric Mirrors Edge, the colours are very bright and sharp but Tokyo 42 certainly has its own aesthetic and beauty going on. You can check it out for yourself in the video below, its only 4.2 seconds long (you see what they did there) so it won't eat up too much of your day but it does give you an idea of how it looks and plays. You can check out more gameplay videos on YouTube if you like what you see.

So there you have it folks, do you fancy messing around with the lovechild of GTA and Syndicate, please feel free to leave any thoughts on the matter in the comments below.
