Fear The Wolves Brings The Battle Royale Genre To Chernobyl

Fear The Wolves is the brand new IP from developer Vostok Games. Vostok Games formed back in 2012 when GSC (the team behind the brilliant STALKER game back in 2007) collapsed during the development of STALKER 2. Most of the old GSC team decided to stay together and form Vostok Games but unfortunately the newly created dev couldn't secure the IP rights for STALKER 2. The rights are still held by the former owner of GSC and unfortunately, it looks as though we will never see another STALKER game. Fear The Wolves is due to come out later this year for PC, PS4 and Xbox One.

Fear The Wolves, like STALKER, is set in the toxic, radiation soaked wastelands of Chernobyl. The game is a 100 player, last man standing, battle royale FPS that allows you to go in solo or team up with some mates for squad matches. It is certainly similar to PUBG in concept but Fear The Wolves adds an extra layer of survival thanks to rancid wastelands the game is set in. Like PUBG, players will have to scavenge for supplies such as weapons, ammo and armour but unlike PUBG, the map in Fear The Wolves contains other dangers that can harm you, such as strange anomalies and creatures that lurk in the shadows.

The game will have a day and night cycle and the developers are promising some areas of the map can only be entered with the right gear. I'm thinking breathing masks and filters similar to those found in the awesome Metro games might be required to help you get to these off-limits areas.

Fear The Wolves is set to launch at some point this year through Early Access on Steam, with a bit of luck, hopefully it launches in Game Preview on Xbox too, as we have no official release date as of yet for the full game. Fear The Wolves looks to be another exciting prospect in the newly formed "Battle Royale" genre. Thanks to PUBG's unstoppable success, on both PC and Xbox One, lots of companies are now jumping on the battle royale bandwagon. Fortnite's free to play battle royale add on has been a huge success for Epic Games and it's rumoured that Rockstar are adding a similar mode to the upcoming and spectacular looking Red Dead Redemption 2.

So there you have it folks, another battle royale game is on its way and it looks as though the genre is here to stay. Well, as long as there is money to be made off it anyway I suppose. What do you think, are you happy with this new twist in the FPS genre or do you think we already reached saturation point with FPS's about ten years ago. Please leave any thought you have in the comments below.
