Planet Of The Apes: Last Frontier Is Coming This Autumn To Xbox One, PS4 And PC

Planet Of The Apes: Last Frontier is set to be released sometime in Autumn of this year. The game is being developed by The Imaginati Studios and is going to be published by the same company Andy Serkis runs, The Imaginarium. The game is set to come out for Xbox One, PS4 and PC.

Story

Last Frontier is set between the events of Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes and War For The Planet Of The Apes. The game's story centres around a group of apes that journey to the Rocky Mountains to escape the upcoming war. As winter is fast approaching, the apes must head out to find supplies to keep themselves alive during the cold winter months ahead. Unfortunately, their quest to find the supplies they need puts them in direct contact with humans.

Gameplay

Last Frontier is a cinematic adventure. You will never have direct control over any of the characters you play as, the adventure is entirely choice based with the developers stating that a decision will have to be made by the player about every twenty seconds in game. This is certainly a brave decision, taking all exploration and puzzle solving out of players hands is a bold move from the developers but they seem confident that Last Frontier will be different enough to hold its own. Martin Alltimes, the founder of Imaginati had the following to say regarding the gameplay.

It’s a creative risk, but when we talked to everyone on the team, they really believed in it. It would have been very easy for us to copy what had gone before.

The entire game is expected to last between two to three hours. In game, you get to make decisions for both the humans and the apes and as the Last Frontier is a standalone story, your decisions can lead to the death of some of the characters. Because of this, Last Frontier will have multiple endings and multiple endings basically means that you will have to play through it more than once to see everything it has to offer.

My Take

Cinematic adventures can be hit and miss. If the story is gripping and engaging then great, I have no problem with them at all, they can be brilliant to play through but on the other hand, if the story is weak or makes no bloody sense, then they are a nightmare to endure, plain and simple. Hopefully the Last Frontier falls into the former and not the latter category.

There certainly is a massive audience for this type of game, Telltale have proved that with The Walking Dead, Game Of Thrones and all their other various titles. I know Telltale's adventures puts you in direct control of a character and has lots of action based QTE's, but the main driving force behind their games has always been about story telling and the choices you make to shape that story. With a bit of luck, hopefully Last Frontier can reach the same kind of story telling heights.

What do you think folks, are you a fan of cinematic adventure games? Please feel free to leave any thoughts in the comments below.
